If Joycons are attached to the Switch then controls rotate as well so you can play vertical without FlipGrip. Only inverse vertical orientation, I suggest pushing release button on joycons and slide them upside down into FlipGrip instead sliding in Switch upside down which can cause blocked vents and overheating.
